BILLY: One of the amazing things about Elijah is that he can sleep anywhere, at any time. I mean I’ve seen him do it and if they don’t go back to him for fifteen minutes he’ll be sitting there like that [pretending to sleep] like for fifteen minutes and then someone will go ‘Elijah!’ ‘Yeah, scene, right!’ and he goes! It’s an incredible thing that he’s got. I mean he must have been so tired during that shoot because y’know there were times when we had time off, Elijah had pretty much no time off - ever.
DOMINIC: I’ve seen him fall down three sets of staircases and then just get up and walk off. That is an incredible gift man, he’s like y’know, Chaplin.
SEAN: I sort of appointed myself as his kind of minder. Y’know I wanted to look after him and make sure he was okay.
ELIJAH: Sean was very much Sam for me, always looking after me, being there for me.
SEAN: He kept locking his keys in his apartment and he’d leave and couldn’t get back in and I’d be like ‘Don’t worry I’ll take care of it’. I would arrange to have a locksmith brought out there and get his keys so he could continue going about, having whatever fun he was having or talking to who he was talking to and forty-five minutes later I would bring him his keys. I saw the need for life to imitate art. Sam needed to look after Frodo as his primary identity, as the fellowship began to coalesce that was the job I carved out for myself.

My children are adorable. My children are fantastic. They’re wonderful, sweet, all of them. Arthur [Bowen] is very good, sort of the quietest of the three and he plays Albus. He’s very, very sweet, young polite. And then there’s the other two. There’s Will Dunn who plays my elder son… who is… [interview reminds him of his name]James! Thank you very much. Oh god… I should have read that script better (laugh). He reminded me a lot of me when I met him in the auditions. I think that’s why I was like “he has to be one of my kids!” Even though he’s not as pale as I am but he has this… he’s very chatty, he’s fourteen… kind of like how I think I am – very bright but not academic. he had a lot of trouble at school. Not trouble but, you know, school wasn’t easy for him, like it wasn’t for me. And he’s super bright, a really smart kid, so that was great to have him as my son. And then there’s Daphnie [de Beistegui] who plays Lily. She was amazing. She’s just like this little, incredible creature. She kind of basically adopted me as her father for the days that we were filming. So she would sort of be hanging onto me as we were walking around the set, which was great. And she’s really, really sweet. They’re all so smart, Arthur, Will and Daphne are all very bright.
